Wrecks & Relics 2010

Thanks everyone for attending – it was a great weekend! A couple of bits of housekeeping.

Firstly we will try to upload as many pics as possible from the weekend but you might also want to check out Darryl Meredith’s site (he’s a professional photographer from the Caloundra Longboard Club).  Over the weekend he and his wife took over 2400 surfing photos so there is a fairly good chance he has taken some photos of nearly all the people that surfed on the weekend. You just need some patience to hunt through all the photos but you never know who you might find. Go to www.caloundraphoto.com and click on the surf button.

Secondly, you may want to check out all the entries from the Waxhead “Quotable Quotes” competition (including those that weren’t read out on the day). Just go to www.waxhead.net.au and click on the link on the home page.

See you all next year!

Welcome Dinosaurs,

We are all hoping to ride some crystal sliders at First Point on the 5th & 6th June. We were really fortunate at this year’s Noosa Festival of Surfing and are hoping the lucky streak will continue for the Wrecks & Relics in 2010 with a couple of days of consistent surf and some clear Winter days. If not, we still know how to have a good time!

Sponsors
Thanks again to our major sponsors who have come back on board. John Madill Toyota have provided generous financial support and Peter & Janet White have once more donated a fabulous Classic Malibu surfboard which will go to one very lucky ‘Wreck’ at the conclusion of the weekend.

Other sponsors are: Banana Boat sunscreen, Golden Breed, Rip Curl, Old Guys Rule, FCS, Pacific Longboarder Magazine, Far King Wax, Waxhead, and Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club. Lion Nathan have come to the party with their Summer Bright Lager our official beer for this Surfing Queensland sanctioned event.

Sign-On
Sign-on begins at 5.30pm Friday 4th June upstairs at the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club in Hastings Street. Register, collect your competitor bag, and join your friends for a drink. Club President, Dave Dunn, will briefly welcome everyone and Contest Director Paul Winter will provide a rundown for the following days’ surfing. Meals and music are available at the venue for those who want to carry on afterwards.

Quotable Quotes Competition
Andrew, our club Secretary, is organizing a giveaway competition for Waxhead products. Keep your ears open for ‘quotable quotes’ uttered by your fellow participants, tell Andrew (or record them on the board provided) and at the end of the weekend the winning quote – at it’s nominee – will win a prize!

The Surfing
The Wrecks & Relics contest has expanded to it’s very maximum for a two-day event so please keep an eye on the running order and progressions and ensure you’re on time for all heats. There just aren’t enough daylight hours at this time of year to allow for any delays.

Surfing begins 7am Saturday and 7.20am Sunday.

Meet at 6.30am at First Point each day to find out where the comp will be held. If the comp is moved to Access 12 in the Woods, a notice will be left at the car park for those who turn up later.

Surfing finishes about 4pm Saturday and 2pm Sunday. Preso’s start around 2.30pm Sunday and then we can all go home for a nana nap!

Judging
Peer judging format is the same as last year. Judge a heat – miss a heat – surf a heat. It works when everyone participates and it gives you a chance to familiarize yourself with conditions before it’s your turn to hit the water. Specialist judges will be provided for SUP heats. We’ll try to get the Heat Draw on the website a couple of days prior to the comp.

Old Mal
For those concerned about not having a suitable board for the Old Mal division, Darryl Homan is bringing a small selection from his renowned collection for competitors to borrow. Please let us know by return email if you are one of these people.

Breakfast and lunch
Complementary breakfast and light lunch are provided for each competitor each day. Please don’t expect more than your share as those in the water or about to surf their heats may miss out. If you enjoy it, which you undoubtedly will, say thanks to Susie and her fabulous team of helpers.

Parking
Beware! Much of the parking in Hastings Street is 1 hour only and the inspectors are ruthless! The Lions Park (opposite Golden Breed), the public car park beside the Emerald and The Woods area are all day parking and the Noosa Heads Surf Club car park has a three-hour limit.

Saturday Night Book Launch
For those looking for something fun to do on Saturday night 5 June, Phil Jarratt is launching his latest book, ‘Salts & Suits – an inside look at the surf industry’, over sunset drinks at Coconut Grove in Duke Street, Sunshine Beach, between 4 & 6pm. $25 gets you a welcome drink and snacks. Bookings are essential: phone 07-5473 5676.

Look forward to a fantastic weekend of socialising & surfing
