Competition Info
WRECKS & RELICS 2012 - It’s always great to make it through another year – hope yours has been all good so far!
The date is set… see you back in Noosa for the 8th annual W&R comp on 23 & 24 June 2012. A new website for W&R2012 is on the way and Entry Forms will be available online from 11 March or at the Noosa Malibu Club tent at this year’s Noosa Festival of Surfing. This year we are really keen to run an Over 70s division so spread the word to all your more experienced mates and start training!
A warm welcome to any W&R virgins,
and welcome back to all the returning fossils
The dates are set for the Wrecks & Relics 2011 so mark the weekend of 18 & 19 June in your diaries. Last year, with some help from Huey, Castaways hosted a fun event with plenty of waves, but we are ever-hopeful of a couple of clear winter days with pumping surf at First Point. If that doesn’t happen, we still know how to have a good time!
The Wrecks & Relics celebrates the fact that we are still getting into the water and enjoying the sport of surfing. Level of ability is not an issue, although it helps if you want to score a trophy. What’s important is the camaraderie, along with a helping of good natured chiacking, and challenging ourselves against the conditions nature serves up on the day.
Conditions of Entry
- Entry fee is $70.
- To compete you must be 50 years old as at 18th June 2011.
- One division ONLY per entrant.
- Every competitor must help with judging using the “Judge a heat – Miss a heat – Surf a heat” format.
- The Wrecks & Relics is a two day competition and every competitor surfs at least twice.
- Entries close 1st May or when full.
To allow for more competitors, you may only enter in your age division OR the Old Mal OR the Stand Up Paddle (SUP) division, ie: one division only. Competitor List will be published on this website (www.noosawrecksandrelics.com) when they are available. Please check for updates.
Entries
Click this link here or the image in the sidebar to the right to download your entry form. Read the instructions, make your payment and send it off the address given on the form. Check back regularly; when your entry has been processed you name will be added to the competitor list page.
Initially, the numbers of heats for each division are set but reserves will still be accepted after divisions are full. We want to remain fluid with number of heats between divisions to cater for the demand. If demand is greater in one division than others we will adjust heat numbers as necessary so get your entries in asap… it’s first in best dressed.
ENTRIES UPDATE
The dinosaurs have stampeded the Over 60′s division and as a result we have added a fifth heat. Progressions have been worked out to suit, still allowing a minimum of two surfs each, and are a little different to the norm. A plethora of fossils wanting to star in the ultimate Over 65′s division has resulted in an extra heat also. This will bring out that latent competitive spirit as it is no longer a straight final.
Those competitors who didn’t mark their preference for long or short sleeves are getting the short sleeved version by default, unless you request otherwise before they are ordered.
Payment
We accept Direct Deposit, cheque or money order.
Direct Deposit details: Account No: 125083 BSB: 034244. Please use your full name and division as reference for the payment. If paying by direct deposit please ensure we still receive your completed and signed entry form by email or post.
All cheques & money orders must be made payable to “Noosa Malibu Club”.
Download and complete the Entry Form and post to: “Wrecks & Relics” P.O. Box 835, Noosa QLD 4567. Contact: Libby Winter, Registrar (0417 007 394) or email: libby@noosawrecksandrelics.com.
N.B. Don’t forget to read and sign the waiver at the bottom of the entry form.
Sponsors
Thanks again to our major sponsors who have come back on board. John Madill Toyota have provided generous financial support and Peter & Janet White have once more donated a fabulous Classic Malibu surfboard which will go to one very lucky ‘Fossil’ at the conclusion of the weekend.
As usual, and thanks to our amazing sponsors, some fabulous prizes will be given away at the beach over the weekend.
Sign-On
It all begins at 5.30pm Friday 17th June downstairs at the Reef Hotel on the crest of Noosa Drive just as you head down the hill to Hastings Street. Register, collect your competitor bag, and join your friends for a drink. Club President, Dave Dunn, will say what’s expected, as will Contest Director Paul Winter. Meals and bevies are available at the venue for those who want to carry on afterward. The Reef is offering a special for our competitors – steak or fish with chips and salad plus a drink for $12!!
The Surfing
The Wrecks & Relics contest has expanded to the very max for a two-day event so keep an eye on the running order and progressions to ensure you’re on time for your heats. There aren’t enough daylight hours at this time of year to factor in delays. Surfing begins7am Saturday and Sunday.
Meet at 6.30am at First Point each day to find out where the comp will be held. If the comp is moved to Access 12 in the Woods or Castaways, a notice will be left at the car park to direct stragglers. Surfing finishes about 4pm Saturday and 2pm Sunday. Preso’s start around 3.30pm Sunday.
We are looking forward to the entertaining presence of some strong longboard clubs and their supporters. Burleigh and Ballina are looking promising!
Judging
Peer judging format is the same as previous years. Judge a heat – miss a heat – surf a heat. It works when everyone participates and it gives you a chance to familiarize yourself with conditions before it’s your turn to hit the water. Specialist judges will be provided for SUP heats. We’ll try to get the Heat Draw on the website a couple of days prior to the comp.
Old Mal
Please let us know if you need to borrow a suitable board for this event and Darryl Homan will see what he can arrange.
Breakfast and lunch
Complementary breakfast and light lunch are provided for each competitor each day. Please don’t expect more than your share as those in the water or about to surf their heats may miss out. If you enjoy it, which you undoubtedly will, say thanks to Susie and her fabulous team of helpers.
Parking
Beware! Much of the parking in Hastings Street is 1 hour only and the inspectors are ruthless! The Lions Park (opposite Golden Breed), the public car park beside the Emerald and The Woods area are all day parking and the Noosa Heads Surf Club car park has a three-hour limit.
Trophies
Last year Ed Hunt did a fabulous job with his hand crafted steel plate surfer cut-outs. This year in keeping with the ‘Fossils’ theme, Frank from Crystal Encounters has sourced genuine 350 million year old (so much older than The Mex and Big Wave) squid fossils from Morocco. Step up the training to better your chances at being the proud owner of your very own Orthoceras.
Look forward to another fantastic weekend of socialising & surfing…
